the reason they should go with an unknown is because it would be an awesome nod to the original casting which made Whoopi a star.

I wouldn’t call Cynthia Erivo a household name.

But films like Bad Times At The El Royale, Widows, and next year’s Harriet could put her on the path to becoming a household name.

Even if Cynthia Erivo isn’t as well-established in the film world yet, they could still surround her with more high profile film actors. It was done with Hairspray where they had an unknown actress by the name of Nikki Blonsky in the lead role, but they were able to surround her with celebrities such as John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, and James Marsden. While Blonsky’s career sadly never took off after the film, that casting formula at least worked out at the box office as Hairspray became one of the most successful movie musicals of the 21st century.

An unknown actress would have incredibly big shoes to fill re: Cynthia Erivo. Seems churlish to not let her have the role on film that she just won a Tony for, and a very deserved win BTW. This unknown would have to be someone incredible. If you want to nod/honor the original film, then expand the film musical ensemble some and give cameos to Whoopi, Oprah, Danny Glover, Margaret Avery, etc.

I would be curious to see how McQueen or Rees would handle directing a musical.

Well, Steve McQueen has recently revealed that he wants to do a musical.

Cynthia Erivo was asked about this recently announced project in an interview with newnownext.com.

It was recently announced that the musical is being adapted into a film. Are you as excited as I am?
Yes. I’m glad it’s coming to the big screen because it definitely deserves that treatment.

The gays may riot if you don’t play Celie in the movie, Cynthia.
[Laughs] I hear you. Look, I can’t really say anything except that I would love to be a part of it. If it works out, I would be more than happy to be a part of that story again. It definitely changed my life.”
